{"id":12294,"date":"2019-01-15T20:57:51","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T01:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/?p=12294"},"modified":"2019-01-15T21:00:12","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T02:00:12","slug":"diy-engine-fire-prevention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/diy-engine-fire-prevention\/","title":{"rendered":"DIY: Engine Fire Prevention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the classic VW air-cooled engine, a few things typically go wrong.\u00a0 Since there were so many Beetles, we have a pretty big sample set of potential issues.\u00a0 One thing that commonly goes wrong &#8211; engine fires.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Engine fires have more than one cause.\u00a0 Most folks on the internet see a fuel filter in the engine bay they instantly loose their mind and instantly suggest to move the fuel filter as a response to an engine that won&#8217;t start.\u00a0 Why is this the reaction?\u00a0 More importantly &#8211; what is the cause?<\/p>\n<p>There are a few common causes,\u00a0 plastic fuel filters can deteriorate or melt on hot exhaust components,\u00a0 brittle or cracked fuel lines, incorrect fuel line, leaking fuel pump, or leaking carburetor.\u00a0 All of these can be prevented.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I like to have a fresh fuel filter under my fuel tank and a second within inches (er, centimeters) of my carburetor inlet which is contrary to popular opinion.\u00a0 This nearly guarantees me that no foreign matter can enter my carburetor, save for a short run of fuel line. Other folks have taken to mounting the fuel filter under the car just above the axle, hung from a bracket off the differential cover on the transmission.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t a bad location since the fuel line exits the frame horn close by.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12295\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12295\" style=\"width: 498px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/filterbracket.jpg\" alt=\"Custom VW Fuel Filter Bracket\" width=\"498\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/filterbracket.jpg 498w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/filterbracket-300x291.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Custom VW Fuel Filter Bracket<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking of fuel line, there is a good chance you may have the wrong fuel line on your VW.\u00a0 The original German fuel line was 5.0mm I.D., but since most automotive shops don&#8217;t carry metric line folks tend to use 1\/4 inch I.D. line (actually 0.234&#8243; I.D.), which is 6.0 mm.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t a tight fit and a recipe for fuel leaks.\u00a0 To resolve this to some degree, we use clamps to deal with the oversized hose.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever seen factory fabric\/rubber hose for a VW, you will notice that there was no hose clamps.\u00a0\u00a0 The factory line was a tight 5.0mm I.D. and because of the fabric braid, it was resistant to pulling off a fuel inlet or hard line.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the factory style fuel line does not withstand modern fuels well, and they tend to rot prematurely.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you run this type of line, you may wish to ensure that you refresh it periodically.<\/p>\n<p>Another failure point, common to many carburetors and some fuel pumps is a loose fuel inlet. \u00a0 They are commonly brass pushed into cast aluminum.\u00a0 This simple press fit is sometimes less than ideal in terms of reliability, and sometimes the Brazil\/Mexico reproductions are even worse fitment than the original equipment.<\/p>\n<p>On the DWK Facebook group Martin Schilling recently posted a topic that was the original idea for this article. Brazil Solex. The brass fitting popped out while it was running so it sprayed gas everywhere.<br \/>\nI tapped it with a 6mm tap and die and used Loctite sleeve retainer. It\u2019s much more secure now.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;d say that looks pretty awesome and would solve the inlet fitment issue.\u00a0 Others suggested that they use mechanics wire, JB Weld to remedy this.<\/p>\n<p>Periodically inspect your fuel delivery system to ensure that the rubber components are in good shape, and check the condition of the fuel filters.\u00a0 Check the rubber lines to ensure that they are not hard\/brittle or mushy.
