{"id":72,"date":"2018-01-06T21:55:59","date_gmt":"2018-01-07T02:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.243.103.25\/armaturenbrett\/?p=72"},"modified":"2018-01-25T22:34:34","modified_gmt":"2018-01-26T03:34:34","slug":"review-scat-pushrod-tubes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/review-scat-pushrod-tubes\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: SCAT Pushrod Tubes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Does your VW mark it&#8217;s spot?\u00a0 It&#8217;s not all that cute.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually kinda obnoxious.\u00a0 When you have an engine that&#8217;s complete with rusty pushrod tubes,\u00a0 what do you do?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The only practical choice without tearing down your engine is to use split style expansion pushrod tubes.\u00a0 The problem with them is they usually leak since most &#8220;econo&#8221; models are plastic.\u00a0 Other models are aluminium, threaded with a nut and an additional jam nut.\u00a0 However,\u00a0 since the engine does expand and contract between hot and cold, the fixed style is rugged, but likely to leak over time.<\/p>\n<p>My 1975 Bug likely had original pushrod tubes, which have been leaking. Leaking so much, that I have been graciously offering free rustproofing to drivers behind me.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a problem! It was certainly on my shortlist of things to repair.<\/p>\n<p>I included a set on my latest order from cip1.ca.\u00a0 I chose the &#8220;SCAT <span class=\"productnamecolorLARGE colors_productname\">C15-20175 &#8211; NEW STYLE HI-PERFORMANCE ALUMINUM SPRING-LOADED PUSHROD TUBES &#8211; WITH DUAL O-RINGS DESIGN&#8221;.\u00a0 If one o-ring is good, then two o-rings is better, right!?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The order from CIP1.ca showed up quickly, and upon inspection &#8211; they looked great but did not include installation instructions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8120 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pr1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\" \/>Common sense should tell you how to install these.\u00a0 They\u00a0 have a longer end (like a very short windage tube), this end slips into the block. This is the larger diameter tube.\u00a0 The smaller diameter tube is the end that goes to the cylinder head.\u00a0 Different forum posts debate how to install them, and deal with the rather springy spring.\u00a0 This included jamming the tubes with nylon tie-wraps.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t do this &#8211; it sounds like a way to mis-shape them and cause a leak.<\/p>\n<p>To install them &#8211; I simply loosened and removed the rocker arm assemblies.\u00a0 The push rods were then removed.\u00a0 I kept everything in order so things would line up again and the tolerances would be fairly close when setting the valves.\u00a0 I used a pair of slip-joint pliers to liberate the rusty old pushrod tubes from the engine.\u00a0 Easy done!\u00a0 I suggest cleaning\u00a0 up the mating surfaces and adjacent area on both ends (on the block and on the cylinder heads).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With the SCAT pushrod tube kit, there is some assembly required.\u00a0 The &#8220;dual o-rings&#8221; must be <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8121 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/pr2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"50\" height=\"50\" \/>installed on the small diameter tube.\u00a0 Once I installed the o-rings , I greased them to aid installation and operation of the tubes. I installed the white viton seals on each end of the tubes, then nested the smaller into the larger.\u00a0 At this point I offered the one end into the block and got ready to compress the smaller end into the larger end.\u00a0 I used a very large (broad with a hex-shaft) screwdriver as a pushing device. I directed the other end towards the head.\u00a0 When the end is lined up with the opening in the head, slip out the screwdriver.\u00a0\u00a0 Repeat 8 times.<\/p>\n<p>I reinstalled all the pushrods to the original locations, and reinstalled the rocker arm assemblies.\u00a0 I torqued the rocker arms to 18 FT\/Pounds.\u00a0 I then set the valve clearance at .006 inch. using the valve set procedure and reinstalled the valve covers.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom Line:\u00a0 These do not leak oil at all!\u00a0 They are pretty fantastic.\u00a0 I&#8217;d recommend these to anyone that wants to stop an obnoxious oil leak.<\/p>\n<p>\/M<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Does your VW mark it&#8217;s spot?\u00a0 It&#8217;s not all that cute.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually kinda obnoxious.\u00a0 When you have an engine that&#8217;s complete with rusty pushrod tubes,\u00a0 what do you do?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_editorskit_title_hidden":false,"_editorskit_reading_time":0,"_editorskit_is_block_options_detached":false,"_editorskit_block_options_position":"{}","_crdt_document":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[4,6,5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-72","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-aftermarket","category-engine","category-review"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Review: SCAT Pushrod Tubes - K-W &amp;
