{"id":8947,"date":"2018-05-18T12:00:20","date_gmt":"2018-05-18T16:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/?p=8947"},"modified":"2018-05-18T20:54:19","modified_gmt":"2018-05-19T00:54:19","slug":"repair-glovebox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/repair-glovebox\/","title":{"rendered":"Repair:  Glovebox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So &#8211; this weeks article is a pretty basic repair, but pretty much necessary these days on the older Standard Beetles and early Super Beetles.\u00a0 The original glove boxes are made with a paper fiber material that hasn&#8217;t held up well over the years.\u00a0 On my Beetle, staying original isn&#8217;t all that important.\u00a0 More important to me, is the car being functional.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8952\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8952\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8952 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1448476-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1448476-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1448476-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1448476-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1448476.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Type 1 &#8211; Late Model Plastic Glove Box<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Aftermarket glove boxes do exist, and are typically injection molded plastic.\u00a0 There are\u00a0 a few types that exist.\u00a0 Some offer the ability to create a hidden location for an aftermarket stereo system .\u00a0 This is a bit of a classy way to have a stock looking dash, but have great sounding tunes in your bug.\u00a0 The other style is simply a plastic replica of the paper fiber original.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what I installed in my 1975 Standard Beetle.\u00a0 These are available from our sponsors &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnsbugshop.com\/\">John&#8217;s Bug Shop<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cip1.ca\">CIP1.ca<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 They come ready to go for 1969 to 1977 flat dash cars, with the trunk release in the glove box.\u00a0 Dealing with this trunk release is a bit of a pain.\u00a0 The cable must be removed from the lock assembly at the front of the car.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8949\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8949\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8949 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/lock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"162\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hood lock &#8211; Cable release screw (A)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At this point, don&#8217;t close the hood, or there is a chance you will not be able to open your hood again (without major surgery).\u00a0 It&#8217;s a Phillips screw you can access from the access port on the latch. (<em>A on the image above<\/em>)\u00a0 You must also remove the cable from the mount point adjacent to the glovebox, with another Phillips screw.\u00a0 You should now be able to remove the strap around the glove box. This should be an 8mm head on a screw.\u00a0 The old glovebox should come free at this point.\u00a0 You can use a drill to remove the two rivets. Now the release handle should be free.\u00a0 You can take the opportunity to grease the cable.\u00a0 On the new glove box there are three holes pre-drilled in the plastic to accept the unlock handle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8953\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8953\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8953 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1449011-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1449011-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1449011-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1449011.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8953\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Release handle in position. Must be threaded from inside the glove box.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If you are following along, there are two rivets and one screw. \u00a0 This is on purpose, as the screw is used to mount the new glovebox to a bracket which will stabilize the glovebox in the opening, especially when operating the release lever.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8955 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1455254-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1455254-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1455254-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1455254-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1455254.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t do as I&#8217;ve done in the picture, I&#8217;ve totally missed the need for the bracket.\u00a0 I&#8217;m about to find out when I install the glove box into the opening and try to operate the release lever.\u00a0 The rivet closest to the glove box door shouldn&#8217;t be installed.<\/p>\n<p>I also used some foam weatherstrip material to pad the back of the glovebox strap to put a little more pressure on the glovebox in the opening to make for a nice tight fit.<\/p>\n<p>So &#8211; it&#8217;s about at this point I get things all set to try operating the release lever and I find out the whole glovebox moves when I do this.\u00a0 I then realize that the screw and the bracket are required to keep the glovebox from floating about.\u00a0 After removing the superfluous rivet, and using the screw and bracket the assembly seems to work correctly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8956\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8956\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8956 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1543217-e1526435500565-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1543217-e1526435500565-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_20180506_1543217-e1526435500565.jpg 656w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 100vw, 197px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two Rivets, and a screw for a bracket!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now fasten the cable to the lock assembly at the front of the car.\u00a0 The cable can be threaded through the eye and the set screw tightly fastened.\u00a0 Again, if the cable slips, it will be nearly impossible to release the trunk.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget to attach the cable sheath near the glovebox as well.\u00a0 Have a helper operate the release in the glovebox,\u00a0 so you can visually confirm the second stage lock on the lock assembly opens fully.\u00a0 If it does not open fully, take the time to adjust the cable until it does open fully and correctly.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8949\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8949\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8949 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kwbugclub.org\/armaturenbrett\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/lock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"162\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lock assembly &#8211; Cable set screw (A), Secondary lock(B).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You can see in this example, if the release was fully depressed in the glove box, the secondary lock would still be engaged. This opening must be &#8220;round&#8221; if you have the release depressed, or the hood will be become permanently locked.\u00a0 Adjust the cable appropriately.<\/p>\n<p>If you are <em>feeling lucky, punk<\/em> &#8211; you can test your second stage lock now, and hopefully you can open the trunk.\u00a0 If you can&#8217;t, I can assure you that you won&#8217;t like the method in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cip1.ca\/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DC10%2D9652\">Bentley book<\/a> for resolving this issue.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s about it, now my glove box is functional again and won&#8217;t deteriorate like the paper style of glove box.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So &#8211;
